Vermont Delegation Announces $5.5 Million Award To Bring Faster Broadband To Rural Waitsfield Champlain Valley Telecom Customers
U.S. Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch said that a $5.5 million stimulus broadband grant and loan package to Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom, announced today (Wednesday), will help connect their most rural and remote customers to high speed fiber optic internet access. VTA, Sovernet and Supporting Partners Receive Federal Stimulus Funds to Bring Broadband Connectivity to Vermont Communities
The Vermont Telecommunications Authority and Sovernet Communications reported today that their public-private partnership, Vermont FiberConnect, will receive a $33.4 million grant from the NTIA. The grant will allow Sovernet to develop, own, maintain, and operate a 773 mile fiber-optic middle mile network in southern, central, and northeastern Vermont. The project will connect over 340 community anchor institutions in the project area, including State owned buildings, public safety towers and all public and private K-12 schools, public libraries and colleges that elect to participate in the project. VTA Awards $200k Broadband Grant to Cloud Alliance The Vermont Telecommunications Authority (VTA) has awarded a $200,000 grant to Cloud Alliance, LLC to expand broadband in the towns of Woodbury, Hardwick, and Wolcott. Cloud Alliance currently offers land-based, wireless broadband in Marshfield, Plainfield, East Montpelier, and Calais. "This is an exciting day for Cloud Alliance as we take this opportunity to spread the company's reach to help rural Vermonters demanding broadband access," said Michael Birnbaum, general manager of Cloud Alliance. $116 Million for broadband targets unserved areas of VT
Vermont Business Magazine - 4/10 The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Wednesday that an $81 million broadband stimulus grant and a $35 million government backed loan to Springfield-based Vermont Telephone Company (VTel). The $35,166,081 loan and $81,664,754 grant to VTel Wireless, Inc for their Wireless Open World (WOW) project is one of 49 broadband infrastructure projects announced nationally. Steven Shepard named Chair of Vermont Telecommunications Authority Dr. Steven Shepard, a Williston-based technology educator and writer, has been appointed Chair of the Vermont Telecommunications Authority. Dr. Shepard is the founder of the Shepard Communications Group and co-founder of the Executive Crash Course Company, and has more than 25 years of experience in the technology industry. Dr. Shepard was appointed by Governor Jim Douglas, Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith, and Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin. This position has been created through federal stimulus funding and is expect to last 4 years. Among doing many things this position will design and implement a communications program that informs and excites government, private and non-profit sectors' leadership about plans and policies to expand e-State initiatives that promote access to and use of broadband across Vermont.
