VTA to Negotiate Contracts for Cellular Service Expansion

Montpelier — The Vermont Telecommunications Authority (VTA) has announced its intention to negotiate contracts with two companies for the purposes of expanding cellular service in unserved Target Corridors and Drop Zones.

The Vermont Telecommunications Authority (VTA) announced today its intention to fund a multi-provider fiber communications link between Newport and Hardwick. VTA funds in the amount of $500,000 for construction of the fiber link were authorized in Act 53 of the 2011-2012 legislative session. VTA intends to ensure that the design of the proposed facility will include fiber strands which can be used for middle-mile and last-mile broadband purposes, as called for in the authorizing legislation.

Montpelier, Vermont - Stephan Morse, former Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives, recently accepted a seat on the Board of Directors of the Vermont Telecommunications Authority. Stephan re-joins the VTA after a brief hiatus. A lifelong Vermonter and resident of Newfane, he is highly engaged at the state and local levels in education, economic development, and as an Environmental Commissioner for the Act 250 Board. He also serves on several non-profit boards including Marlboro College and Grace Cottage Hospital.

In addition to comments related to broadband generally, comments specifically on expansion of fiber optic facilities are also being solicited.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) recently issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Vermont FiberConnect (VFC) project. As a requirement of the project, 70% funded by the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), Sovernet Fiber Corp. conducted an environmental assessment which resulted in the FONSI. The project will be constructed on existing utility poles and will therefore have relatively little environmental impact. The issuance of the FONSI will allow Sovernet to begin construction activities on the project.

Montpelier — The FAIRband Committee announced the completion of Phase I of a fiber-to-the-home (“FTTH”) deployment in West Fairlee by Topsham Communications. On February 21, the West Fairlee Selectboard received a final inspection report on the fiber network installation and voted to release grant funds for the project that were held in escrow. With completion of this phase of the project, residents and businesses along an approximate eight mile route now have access to broadband service in West Fairlee.

MONTPELIER, VT, -- The Vermont Telecommunications Authority (VTA) and Sovernet Communications reported today that their public-private partnership, Vermont FiberConnect, will receive a $33.4 million grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program. The grant will allow Sovernet to develop, own, maintain, and operate a 773 mile fiber-optic middle mile network in southern, central, and northeastern Vermont.
